Young Boys supporters have been banned from their next Europa League away game after crowd trouble during November’s tie against Aston Villa.
The UEFA appeals body confirmed on Thursday that Young Boys had been fined €50,000 (£43,700; $58,380) and banned from selling tickets to away supporters for one European game for “throwing of objects, acts of damage and crowd disturbances” during the match at Villa Park on November 27.
The Swiss side will be without away fans for their match against Stuttgart at the MHPArena on January 29, their final fixture of the league phase of the Europa League.
On Sunday, A Young Boys fan was jailed for two months for assaulting a police officer at the game against Villa, while a further three were charged with “using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of or provoke unlawful violence”.
The first-half unrest at Villa Park caused the match to be halted for five-and-a-half minutes, with Villa match-winner Donyell Malen hit by objects thrown from the stands after opening the scoring.
Sections of the Young Boys fans threw objects at Malen when he celebrated his opening goal in the 27th minute, with one hitting him on the head. The Netherlands forward appeared to sustain a small cut, while team-mate Morgan Rogers lifted up his shirt to check if he also had a mark.
Following Malen’s second goal in the 42nd minute, the Dutch international again ran towards the Young Boys supporters. He stopped short of going as close to the terraces as he had previously done, with objects once again thrown from the away end, and a five-and-a-half minute delay ensued.
Young Boys’ captain Loris Benito, alongside his team-mates, attempted to calm down the travelling fans and appeared to ask them to stop throwing objects, while certain members of the crowd were removed from the ground and riot police gathered in front of the away end.
Young Boys manager Gerardo Seoane apologised for the actions of the travelling fans after the game but suggested Malen celebrating his two goals in front of the away end was “a small provocation”.
Villa were 2-1 winners on the night to leave them third in the league phase, while Young Boys are 26th.
