Banana Republic Revisits Its Archive With Its Latest Collaboration

Though an editor’s favorite for in-office attire, Banana Republic‘s legacy spans far beyond well-tailored suits. Original apparel (or gear is perhaps a better word choice) was suited for travel and outdoor use. Recent fashion trends like gorpcore and vintage revival have inspired Banana Republic to revisit its archives and reissue designs as modern reproductions. The collection is well named: The Archive Reissue.

One more thing of note: the collection is a collaboration with The Explorers Club. Those unfamiliar with the institution are likely familiar with its members, including Theodore Roosevelt. With Chapters across the globe, the Explorers Club has united the most influential researchers in the pursuit of scientific expeditions and discoveries from 1904 to today. Banana Republic strives to be the outfit for the great findings in its collaboration with the club.

If the J.Crew X Lee collaboration taught me anything, it’s that the men’s section deserves some attention, too. The Banana Republic Archive Reissue follows suit. The 20-piece collection is largely gender-neutral. After all, curiosity and adventure know no bounds. The oversized tactile jackets and vests, when styled with a belt or a midi skirt (specifically the Khaki Midi Skirt), are suitable for fieldwork or the office.

Banana Republic’s history of travel and tactile wear is on full display across the capsule. The collaboration even casts retro tech in a contemporary light. Consider the Packable Jacket as proof. Lightweight and durable, the nylon-cotton-linen rain jacket folds neatly into a tote without compromising fashion for function. The Trekking Jumpsuit is another hot-ticket item. The rugged cotton fabric makes the perfect companion for a hike or running errands. Truth be told, my errand days probably generate the same number of steps. Pair it with the Oversized Duffle Bag, and you’re ready to chart a course.

With a number of standout pieces, the entire collaboration feels too cool to pick just one. So, let me call out a few top finds. The Pullover Crew-Neck Sweater is a timeless fisherman’s option; the Fireman’s Jacket, featuring frog clasps and a bright yellow hue, is a crowd-pleaser; or the Photojournalist Vest, for which Banana Republic uses a quote from its 1988 catalog to describe: “Numerous photographers have told us they can’t carry on without this vest; we’ll wager you’ll carry on a bit yourself once you’ve tried it.” That’s sure to put a smile on any archive-fashion lover’s face.
