Ballets Jazz Montréal’s “Dance Me” production was created to honor the life and legacy of the company’s hometown musical hero, Leonard Cohen. Born in 1934 in a suburb of Montréal, Cohen went on to be one of the most influential folk musicians to come out of the ‘60s and ‘70s Greenwich Village scene, known for songs like the oft-covered “Hallelujah” and “Suzanne.” He continued releasing music until his death in 2016, with his final album being produced posthumously by his son, Adam Cohen. Both his early songs and works from his later, more meditative catalog will be used to accompany Ballets Jazz Montréal’s performance, choreographed by Andonis Foniadakis, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Ihsan Rustem. The production, which is structured in “seasons” that touch on his most iconic works, was even approved by Cohen during his lifetime.
