College of Medicine and Life Sciences to Host April 22 Seminar on Physician Well-Being



The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences will present a professional development seminar hosted by Stanford Medicine professor Dr. Tait Shanafelt from 7 to 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 22.

The seminar, titled “Organizational Approaches to Improve Physician Well-Being,” will be held in Room 103 of the Health Education Building on Health Science Campus. The event also will be livestreamed on the College of Medicine and Life Sciences faculty development website.

“The College of Medicine and Life Sciences and the University of Toledo Medical Center are immensely fortunate to host Shanafelt to discuss organizational approaches to improve physician well-being,” said Dr. Eric R. Carlson, associate dean for faculty development and affairs and professor of surgery.

“Physician wellness is a topic of critical importance in healthcare to provide for its sustainability in the clinical and educational spaces. Dr. Shanafelt is an international thought leader in physician wellness and burnout, and his contributions to these initiatives are noteworthy and transformational.”

Shanafelt serves as the Jeanie and Stewart Ritchie Professor and the chief wellness officer at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He has conducted multiple nationwide studies on clinician well-being and its implications on quality of care.

The planned sessions are as follows:

•  7 to 8 a.m. — General Lecture: Wellness/Burnout in Academic Medicine

•  8:15 to 9:15 a.m. — Breakout Session: For Medical School Faculty and Leadership

•  9:30 to 10:30 a.m. — Breakout Session: For Hospital Leadership and Medical Staff

•  10:45 to 11:45 a.m. — Breakout Session: For Medical Students and Residents/Fellows

The College of Medicine invites UToledo faculty, staff and students to join the livestream.
