Darren Fletcher will take charge of Manchester United’s next game against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.
United’s interim head coach confirmed that director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada have asked him to oversee this weekend’s FA Cup third-round tie.
Fletcher was installed as interim head coach on Monday following the departure of Ruben Amorim, although he was only confirmed to be on the touchline for Wednesday’s Premier League trip to Burnley, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
United are holding talks with candidates for a longer-term interim head coach position until the end of the season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick both in the running. Fletcher said that conversations would be held after Wednesday’s game as to whether he would stay in position for longer.
When asked if he had received any clarity from Wilcox and Berrada, Fletcher said: “They’ve informed me they’d like me to take the team for Sunday.
“There was a feeling that might have been the case from Monday, but we wanted to focus on Burnley.
“But yes, I’m tasked with leading the team on Sunday, so all my focus and energy goes to that now.”
United dropped points to bottom-half opponents once again as Jaidon Anthony’s second-half equaliser followed a Benjamin Sesko double.
Though frustrated not to take three points, Fletcher said he was delighted with Sesko’s performance, having used his little preparation time since taking the job on Sunday to work closely with the 22-year-old striker.
“I sat down with him yesterday and showed him videos of his movement and how opportunities are going to come, keep believing and making runs,” the Scot added.
“Hopefully, they start flooding in from now. I thought he was fantastic tonight. He maybe could have gone on and got a hat-trick. A real positive night for him.”
