Dominik Szoboszlai said he is “ready to die on the pitch” when Liverpool welcome Paris Saint-Germain to Anfield for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
The Hungary captain issued a rallying cry to Reds supporters before the crucial clash, which the hosts will start 2-0 down after their defeat in the French capital last week.
Liverpool ended a run of three straight losses in all competitions on Saturday, beating Fulham 2-0 to boost their hopes of a top-five finish and Champions League qualification for next season.

Szoboszlai was asked for his message to Liverpool fans before the second leg, noting in the pre-match press conference that “everything can happen at Anfield.”

He added: “We’re going to go all in. We’re going to give our best from minute one until hopefully minute 90 because it can be enough, but maybe if it goes even more, 120, 125.

“So I’m ready to die on the pitch tomorrow. I think I can speak for all of the players because we want it so badly, we worked for it so badly and, in one game, everything can happen at Anfield.”

The 25-year-old, who has scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in all competitions this season, understands the significance of progression to the semi-finals, calling it “the biggest comeback” in his career should they pull it off.

“Of course it will be one of the biggest comebacks in my career probably, especially with Liverpool against Paris in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after 2-0 down. I can say it will be the biggest comeback in my career,” said Szoboszlai.

“They [PSG] have superstars and they have stars, but maybe not as much as when [Lionel] Messi was playing there or when Kylian [Mbappe] was playing there or Neymar was playing.

“Now they have a different type of players, a different system and also a different style of playing football and it’s really hard to play against them, especially when they are really confident right now as well, coming to Anfield with 2-0.

“But as I said before, we are more than ready.”

Despite being one of Liverpool’s standout performers in a decidedly up-and-down season, Szoboszlai made headlines for the wrong reasons because of a gesture he made to the travelling support at the Etihad after a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Emirates FA Cup.

In response to the backlash, the midfielder apologised to Liverpool fans, explaining that it was a “misunderstanding”.

He added: “To make it clear, maybe it was a misunderstanding between me and the fans. I didn’t mean it in a bad way. Obviously I know what the fans mean for this club and what this club means for the fans as well.

“As players, we know we do everything for them as well as we do for us. So if it was a misunderstanding, then I apologise.

“But they can also feel that I’m not feeling better than them. I’m feeling exactly the same way they do. And to make it clear that I am with them and we are with them. Hopefully they are with us as well.”
