DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. (KOLO) – The Douglas County School District is preparing to review a series of high stakes financial decisions at its upcoming special board meeting later today.
Among the key discussion items are proposed school consolidation scenarios, potential layoffs of classified employees, and a possible declaration of a Severe Financial Emergency under Nevada law.
District administrators will present consolidation models based on declining enrollment, facility usage, and a two-year budget reduction plan. Officials say the goal is to capture enough savings to bring the district’s General Fund Ending Balance to net-zero by the end of fiscal year 2027. While trustees will review the financial impact of each option, no formal action is expected on consolidation plans during this meeting.
The board may also take action on a proposed Reduction in Force (RIF) affecting classified and classified management employees. According to the agenda, the layoffs are being considered due to a lack of work or lack of money. If approved, the superintendent Frankie Alvarado would be authorized to carry out the necessary staffing adjustments.
In addition, trustees will consider whether to formally declare a Severe Financial Emergency, a designation reserved for districts facing critical financial conditions, such as a general fund balance falling below 4% or difficulty meeting payroll and debt obligations. If approved, the district would be required to notify the Nevada Department of Taxation and the Committee on Local Government Finance to submit a mandatory plan of corrective action. The declaration could also lead to increased state oversight and technical assistance.
District leaders say the measures are intended to protect essential operations and address growing financial challenges, while community members continue to watch closely for how the decisions could affect students, staff, and schools across the district.
The board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday January 7th, at 4:00pm.
