Free movie tickets benefit WSC students – The Wayne Stater

The partnership between Wayne State College and the Majestic Theatre in Wayne has the opportunity for WSC students to be able to see four movies for free. Dean of Students, Cody Westerhold said, that over the past two semesters about 600 tickets were used by students.

“It’s definitely there in the middle, and it’ll ebb, and flow and it’ll change,” Westerhold said. “So, if we can keep that going and keep that as a resource available to the student body, that would be a wonderful benefit to the community.”

Since there have been students taking advantage of this opportunity, there is the question: Will it be worth it to go to the movies? Student Mariya Mae Corner, said that she watched movies that she wasn’t “expecting” to get to watch. Some movies that Corner went to were “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “The Housemaid.”

“The tickets give me the opportunity to go see a movie that I’m not 100% taking the chance. You know, it might be bad, but it might be really good,” Corner said. “And having those tickets gives me that opportunity because I don’t want to spend six bucks to go see it and have it be a gamble.”

The Majestic allows students to see new movies that are easily accessible, since they are in the downtown area of Wayne.

“When you think about it, the movies that they are playing are newer movies. It’s not box office day one, Oh darn, wait a week and it will be. So, I waited a week, and it only cost me $5 to go and watch a movie. Where else are you gonna find that?” Westerhold said.

From the perspective of a staff member, Westerhold was able to talk about how it benefits the community of Wayne as a whole and the students of WSC.

“I think it’s good to have extra resources and opportunities for students to do some things,” Westerhold said. “And anytime we can give back and help support the local community, that is a huge win. The more we can do that, the more things will exist for students to do making it a more vibrant community.”
