With demand from Slovenian travelers continuing to rise, Greece is bolstering its air links with Slovenia by adding one more weekly flight, raising the total to three flights per week, between Athens and Ljubljana for the summer of 2026. It was announced by AEGEAN Airlines representative Philippos Liritis during a special event that took place in Ljubljana early this December.
The GNTO, together with the Greek Embassy, organized an event where key tourism professionals, such as tour operators, travel agents, journalists, and representatives of the airport, were brought together. The event marked another milestone in increasingly better cooperation between Greece and Slovenia, where this additional flight reflects a rising demand to travel to Greece, especially from Slovenian tourists in search of unique experiences.
Expanding Greece’s Popularity Among Slovenian Tourists
At the event, Greek Ambassador to Slovenia, Argiris Makris, emphasized the importance of increasing tourist flows between the two countries, highlighting the growing appeal of Greece as a top destination for Slovenian travelers. Greece currently holds the second position among the most popular travel destinations for Slovenians, with many travelers drawn to the country’s natural landscapes, historical landmarks, and outdoor experiences.
Slovenian tourists, in particular, are seeking more opportunities to engage in nature-based activities, such as hiking, beach holidays, and exploring the country’s rich heritage. With its extensive coastlines, mountainous terrain, and cultural diversity, Greece is perfectly positioned to meet this demand, offering Slovenian travelers an abundance of outdoor experiences in addition to its cultural and culinary offerings.
Strategic Plan for Sustainable Tourism Growth
During the event, George Kakoutis, Head of the GNTO office in Serbia, outlined the organization’s strategic plan for 2025–2028, focusing on sustainable tourism development and expanding Greece’s multi-themed tourism offerings. Kakoutis highlighted the importance of promoting sustainable tourism practices and diversifying travel experiences across Greece’s various regions, encouraging visitors to explore beyond traditional tourist hotspots and experience the authentic side of Greece.
This vision aligns with the growing interest in eco-friendly tourism and adventure tourism from travelers across Europe. By expanding air connectivity and promoting new experiences, Greece aims to enhance its tourism appeal and position itself as a leading sustainable destination in the Mediterranean. Future travel trends indicate that travelers are increasingly seeking responsible, experiential tourism, and this expansion will help Greece cater to that demand in the coming years.
Strengthening Ties Between Greek and Slovenian Tourism Stakeholders
The event concluded with a Greek lunch, providing attendees with a relaxed environment to network and discuss further opportunities for collaboration between Greek and Slovenian tourism stakeholders. This informal setting allowed industry professionals from both countries to share insights and ideas about future tourism development, ensuring that the growing tourism demand between Greece and Slovenia continues to be met with the necessary infrastructure and services.
The additional flights and the overall strengthening of bilateral tourism relations will play a crucial role in furthering the growth of Slovenian tourism to Greece, while also benefiting Greece’s tourism industry by attracting a broader range of European visitors. With increasing air connectivity, Greece is poised to become a key destination for Slovenian travelers, further supporting cultural exchange and cross-border collaboration.
Future Impact: Boosting Long-Term Tourism Growth
The introduction of direct flights between Athens and Ljubljana is not just a short-term boost; it signals a broader shift in travel trends that will have a lasting impact on tourism in both countries. By providing more flight options, Greece will attract a wider variety of visitors, not only from Slovenia but from neighboring regions as well. The third weekly flight will cater to the growing demand for short-term city breaks and nature-based holidays in Greece, ensuring that the country remains at the forefront of European travel.
As the Greek tourism sector continues to grow and evolve, Slovenian and other European travelers are expected to play a key role in driving year-round tourism. With the increasing interest in sustainable tourism, local experiences, and nature-based activities, Greece’s expanded connectivity with countries like Slovenia will lead to the creation of long-term partnerships that benefit both the tourism industry and local economies.
Moreover, Slovenia’s growing interest in Greek tourism could pave the way for more cross-promotional efforts in the future, with the potential to introduce new destinations in Greece that align with the changing travel preferences of modern-day tourists. This will allow both countries to benefit from reciprocal growth in the tourism sector, paving the way for a stronger, sustainable tourism relationship moving forward.
Strengthening Greece-Slovenia Tourism Ties for the Future
The introduction of direct flights between Athens and Ljubljana is a big leap for Greece-Slovenia tourism relations and is expected to have an impact on tourism traffic in both the short and long term. With increased air connectivity, combined with the interest in nature-based travel on the rise, Greece is ready to receive more Slovenian visitors than ever before and offer the Slovenians themselves the chance to visit new, diverse regions of Greece.
Emphasizing sustainable tourism and experiential travel, this strategic focus guarantees that the fruits of this initiative will have long-lasting effects contributing to long-term tourism growth between the two countries. While tourism plays an important role in the economies of both nations to date, Greece and Slovenia are working toward a promising future of cooperation and mutual growth within the tourism sector.
