KINGSTON, N.Y. — “American Fiction” is the next screening in the Movies with Spirit series with a special 3 p.m. matinee on Saturday, April 18, at 3 p.m. at the New Progressive Baptist Church, 8 Hone St.
Jeffrey Wright plays a novelist, Thelonius “Monk ” Ellison, frustrated by stereotypes of Black life and ignored by publishers, who writes a parody of a “Black” book under a pen name that becomes a best-seller in this Academy Award-winning dramedy, a description said. Ellison ends up being pulled into the same double standard he set out to expose, leading to chaos in his life, the description added.
The 2023 film, based on Percival Everett’s novel “Erasure,” runs 1 hour and 57 minutes and is rated R.
