The political party Niki warned that Greece’s demographic collapse is already underway and reflects a deep national crisis, calling for immediate measures to address the issue.
In an official statement, the party said Greece is ageing and declining, while rural areas are deteriorating. It criticised the government, claiming it is failing to support the country’s national survival.
Citing data published by the newspaper Dimokratia, Niki reported that across 882 municipalities in the first two months of 2026, deaths significantly outnumbered births, reaching 33,257 compared to 16,173.
The party stated that demographic collapse is not a future threat but an ongoing reality, describing it as a sign of a deep crisis and systemic neglect rather than a temporary phenomenon.
It argued that low birth rates cannot be addressed through population replacement via migration flows, but instead require substantial and targeted support for the Greek population.
Niki called for strengthened support for young couples and families, as well as a clear national plan to address zero-birth rates in municipalities experiencing severe demographic decline. Proposed measures include financial incentives, housing support, and expanded family benefits.
The party also called for the abolition of income criteria for the child benefit, proposing that it be granted universally at the highest rate.
Concluding its statement, Niki stressed that preserving national identity requires concrete action rather than what it described as government inaction.
