Remi Schreiber learned to play the piano using technology that tracks her eye movements. Now, she’s inspiring people from Spokane Valley to screens nationwide.
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A Central Valley School District student is getting her moment in the Hollywood spotlight.
First-grader Remi Schreiber, a special-needs student at Sunrise Elementary School, was featured in an AT&T commercial mixing music with a mission and using her passion to inspire kids just like her.
Like any first grader, Remi loves singing and dancing to her favorite tunes. But due to a lack of oxygen at birth, Remi now lives with cerebral palsy.
“It mainly affects just the way that her body moves,” said Kayla Screiber, Remi’s mom.
Remi’s mom says the disorder affects her ability to use her hands and her ability to speak. But with special technology called iGaze, Remi uses her eyes to talk to her peers, play music, and even play the piano.
“Once we heard there was auditions and that they were interested in Remi, that’s when it flew by so fast,” said Kody Schreiber, Remi’s dad.
Because of her passion for music, Remi was selected to be featured in an AT&T commercial that aired on CBS during the Masters tournament. She had to learn the well-known tune “Gonna Fly Now” from the movie Rocky.
“It was very emotional. They sent US a little sneak peek before it aired. And I can’t still fully watch it without crying,” said Kayla.
Remi’s teachers also say she has been an inspiration in the classroom.
“The commercial embraces inclusion and belonging. And that is what we are providing Remi here in Central Valley and at Sunrise,” said Eileen Nelson, Remi’s special education teacher.
