The Sacramento Kings finished the 2025-26 regular season 22-60, placing 14th in the Western Conference and missing the playoffs. The campaign was defined by inconsistency on both ends of the floor, with defensive lapses and extended losing stretches keeping them near the bottom of the standings throughout the year.
Russell Westbrook joined the Kings on a short-term deal just two days before the season opener. In his 18th NBA season, he appeared in 64 games, starting 58, and averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists. He shot 42.7% from the field, 33.8% from three and 69.4% from the free-throw line, while also contributing 1.3 steals per game.

His season was impacted by multiple injuries, including issues with his quadriceps, thigh, ankle and foot soreness. A right toe injury ultimately ended his season early, sidelining him for the final 11 games after an MRI in late March revealed irritation in the joint of the first toe.
Speaking at his end-of-season press conference, Westbrook reflected on his first season in Sacramento.
“I didn’t have a job until two days before the season,” he said. “I’m blessed to get through a season healthy, grateful for that” (via ABC’s Kevin John).

Westbrook also confirmed he’d love to be back with the franchise next season: “If I’m welcomed back [to the Sacramento Kings], I’ll be back.”
Now 37, Westbrook has played 1,301 NBA games since being drafted fourth overall in 2008, averaging 20.9 points, 8.0 assists and 6.9 rebounds. A former MVP and nine-time All-Star, he spent 11 seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder and has also played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets before this stint in Sacramento.

The Kings head into the offseason facing key roster evaluations, including Westbrook’s future. His experience and leadership remain valuable for a young group, but his age and injury history could be factors to consider as the franchise decides on his potential return for a 19th NBA season.
