Sony Copyright Suit Survives AI Music Generator’s Dismissal Bid


Sony Music Entertainment survived an AI music-generator’s bid to partly dismiss its lawsuit accusing the startup of unlawfully training its model on millions of copyrighted sound recordings.

Sony sufficiently alleges Udio violated copyright law by circumventing YouTube’s tools against “stream ripping,” when a third-party evades barriers to download and copy videos, Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein wrote in a Wednesday order. Udio is accused of navigating around these protections to create its library of content used to train its AI model.
