Stefanos Tsitsipas may be done at the United Cup, but the Greek star says his time in Perth could mark a turning point after completing an unbeaten singles campaign.
The former World No. 3 finished 3–0 in singles for Greece at RAC Arena, highlighted by a 6-4, 7-5 win over World No. 9 Taylor Fritz on Wednesday — his first Top 10 victory in more than 18 months. Team USA went on to claim the tie via mixed doubles, ending Greece’s tournament, but Tsitsipas was encouraged by his form after a long injury layoff.
“Pleased with the win. It was not easy getting into the match,” Tsitsipas told ATPTour.com, having not played competitively since September due to a back injury.
“Matches like this challenge you to the fullest… I was aware entering the court that my focus levels needed to be at their highest.”
The 27-year-old said his aggressive approach paid off.
“I played my game. Very offensive tennis. I dominated from the baseline at times… It is one of those wins that adds to my confidence.”
Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari were unable to overcome Coco Gauff and Christian Harrison in the decisive mixed doubles match, but the 12-time ATP Tour champion said the pairing continues to improve.
“We are building a great duo, me and her,” Tsitsipas said.
“Every doubles match… we come to new realisations about our games. Obviously it sucks losing today, but I see that as a greater opportunity to grow from it.”
Perhaps most encouraging was Tsitsipas’ physical condition, having come through three singles matches and two mixed doubles rubbers pain-free.
“I’m actually very pleased that I get to enjoy tennis daily, without any discomfort,” he said.
“Health is the most important thing in the world… To be able to do that right now is like the biggest bliss.”
Tsitsipas hopes to play the Adelaide International before heading to Melbourne for the Australian Open.
